Sometimes the scope of a legal matter changes after work has begun. If additional work becomes necessary beyond the original scope of your retainer, we will discuss your options, explain any additional fees, and obtain your instructions before proceeding.

What if I'm not sure which service I need?

That's perfectly okay. Many clients contact us before they know exactly what legal service they require. We would be pleased to discuss your situation, answer your questions, and help determine the most appropriate service for your circumstances before you proceed.

Are your fees fixed or hourly?

Many services are offered on a flat-fee basis. Matters involving negotiations or litigation are generally billed hourly. We explain the billing method before work begins.

What is included in a flat fee?

A flat fee covers the agreed scope of work. We explain what is included, what documents are required and whether additional services may be necessary.

Are taxes and disbursements included?

Unless stated otherwise, fees exclude GST and third-party expenses such as court filing fees, probate fees, searches, title insurance, process servers and courier charges. Any anticipated additional costs will be discussed before they are incurred whenever reasonably possible.

Not every family law matter can be completed on a flat-fee basis. Where a matter involves negotiations, court applications, or ongoing litigation, our services are billed on an hourly basis.

Our hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer you choose to work with. Generally, more senior lawyers have higher hourly rates, reflecting their experience and expertise.

Regardless of which lawyer you retain, every litigation file is overseen by senior counsel to help ensure consistent strategy, quality, and client service.

We are also committed to keeping legal costs as reasonable as possible. Administrative and non-legal tasks are delegated to our experienced legal assistants whenever appropriate and are billed at a lower legal assistant hourly rate, allowing lawyers to focus on the work that requires legal expertise.

Before any work begins, we will discuss the anticipated scope of your matter, explain our billing practices, and answer any questions you may have so you can make informed decisions throughout your case.

For litigation matters, our goal is to provide the right level of experience for your matter while managing legal costs responsibly. We believe clients should never pay a lawyer's hourly rate for work that can be completed efficiently by an experienced legal assistant under lawyer supervision.
